A low tree stump cut close to the ground in a green Florida front lawn beside a pile of mulch

A stump left behind after a removal is more than an eyesore. It is a trip hazard, a mower breaker and a hiding place for termites and other pests. Stump grinding is the usual fix. It is quicker and neater than digging it out, and it leaves a spot you can fill and replant or cover with sod.

How stump grinding works

A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning wheel of cutting teeth. The operator sweeps it back and forth across the stump, chewing it into wood chips. Most crews grind several inches to a foot or more below the ground line, depending on what you plan to put there. The result is a pile of chips, which can be hauled away, used as mulch or raked into the hole.

What to decide before the job

  • What goes there next. If you will plant another tree, tell the crew. They may grind deeper or wider.
  • What to do with the chips. Many people keep some for mulch and ask for the rest to be hauled off. Mulch does not need to be perfect, but a thick layer of fresh chips can tie up nitrogen in the soil if you mix it in, so use it as a top layer.
  • Surface roots. Large roots running away from the stump may need to be ground too, especially near a lawn or walkway.
  • Access. A grinder needs a path in. A narrow gate or a backyard with a pool cage can limit the machine size, which may raise the price or the time.

Utilities and buried lines

Before any digging or grinding, underground lines need to be located. In Florida, the free Sunshine 811 service marks buried utilities when it is contacted a few days before work. Sprinkler lines, irrigation controls and low voltage wiring are not always marked, so tell the crew where yours run.

Stump removal or grinding

Removal means pulling the stump and as much root as possible out of the ground, usually with an excavator. It is a bigger job and leaves a large hole, but it is the better choice if you are about to build or pour concrete on the spot. For most yards, grinding is enough.

Palm stumps

Palm trunks are fibrous, and they take a different kind of effort than hardwood. A crew that does palms regularly will tell you what to expect. Some palm stumps and root balls are best handled with an excavator.

What it costs

Stump grinding is often priced by the stump, based on its diameter, plus a minimum charge for coming out. A small stump can be a modest job. Large, hard stumps and many stumps in one visit change the math, and a company will often give a better rate when several are done together. If you are already getting tree removal done, ask whether grinding can be added to the same quote.
